Gesher Disability Resources’
Sponsor Spotlight Series

 Thank you to…

Founded in 1972 as an endowment fund, today the Jewish Community Foundation of Greater Phoenixserves as the region’s center for long term Jewish philanthropy. The Foundation added the B’nai Tzedek Youth Philanthropy Program to mentor the next generation, so they can be responsible donors and future philanthropists.

Gesher has also been awarded funding from B’nai Tzedek in order to start a social group for young adults with disabilities, offer an education session to the community about caring for individuals with disabilities, and more.

Happenings

Gesher’s Student Support Specialist, Deborah Weiner, leading role play exercises with Camp Shemesh counselors.

Gesher Disability Resources (formerly Council For Jews With Special Needs) offers services that are at no cost to your camp.  Made possible in part by a grant from the Jewish Community Foundation, our camp support specialists have been working at camps across the Valley for the past seven years.

Our goals include assisting Jewish camps to become inclusive and meet the needs of more campers.  We offer staff training as a whole group, small group or one-on-one.  According to the American Camp Association, one of the core competencies for camps is to create an environment that builds capacity within the camp community to understand, accept, value, and honor the unique contributions of all people. This year Gesher support specialists conducted trainings on problem solving and bullying prevention through role play. The camp staff worked in small groups to create skits to demonstrate skills learned.

Also, this summer we have implemented a “Mench Moment” program where Gesher support specialists teach social skills to campers through specific character traits like  kindness, empathy and Kavod (respect).
